Inspiration

So after some contemplation, Ive decided to enter the blog world. For anyone whose reached this decision, you know how difficult it is to choose a name. Ive chosen to name my blog "A Turn to Learn" for so many different reasons, and I figure I would briefly talk about these before embarking on my journey through the blog world.

First and foremost, in choosing to teach, I knew that every child should have a turn to learn, and my job would be to give them that chance. The first year that I taught kindergarten, I had my hands full with students with special needs and children in family situations that I wouldnt wish upon my worst enemy. I knew that it was my job to give them a turn to learn, but the hours I spent with them during the school day proved to be far more important than I could have imagined: Not only were they learning from me, but I was learning from them.

In teaching, this reciprocity is frequently overlooked, but so important. Teachers obviously have their turn to learn... At professional development or in searching the internet for ideas. But look at your classroom on any given day. Who is really teaching who? Your students may be learning from you, but with each passing moment you are also learning from them. This begs the question: whose turn is it to learn?

In doing this blog, I hope that I can form even more reciprocal relationships and learn from other teachers!
