Sell or Share

Sell or Share

Cartoon by Tom
Profit making businesses run on a theory of minting money but only businesses that care for their consumers go an extra mile. These brands become immortal and survive for generations based on the single mantra of Sharing. Today when the consumer has moved into the social space, businesses just cant walk in and blow their trumpets. If you dont believe in sharing then the consumer would walk away and take a few more with him. We are living in a world where word of mouth spreads at lightning speed with mere clicks. As a business you have no choice but to adapt too this trend and deliver. Businesses should realize that Brands are now built on the power of sharing and not on the power of selling.

Share with your Consumers
Social media thrives on shared communities. If we like a link, we share with our community! If we post a nice picture of our weekend outing, we share it too. The same applies to businesses, whose survival is directly proportional with its community.

For example, Niraj owns a fleet of cars and he wants to use them as Fun Cars that will pick and drop kids from schools. Niraj plans to use social media for his business so he creates a Facebook fan page that talks only about his service. As a result Fun Cars generated no excitement on the social space and went on being as any another defunct fan page. As a consumer, what do you think that went wrong? Firstly he did not care to ask his consumers(parents) likes and dislikes and secondly he did not share and tried on selling. Niraj could have asked his consumers(parents) for their concerns/suggestions; he could have launched an awareness campaign about road and safety standards; he could have shared links, articles, and videos about how school buses are good but not comfortable. In short the idea should have been listening and sharing with your community. Sharing has a healing touch that builds trust within the community.

Sharing will lead to Selling
Loyal consumers are not bought in the market! They become loyal when you make them feel special. What Niraj should have done was invite parents and their kids for a ride. This way parents would be assured about Nirajs Fun Car and through word of mouth will promote his business further. Social media is not about YOU its about your CONSUMER. Make him happy and you automatically sell.

Sell or Share, what do you believe in?
