Although, we dont take official registration for this webinar session, we have set up a Padlet Wall for you to register creatively and perhaps say hi to the speaker and even ask a question before the webinar:

Created with Padlet

5 Important lessons, I learned from this inspiring talk by Nor Fadzleen Sadon about Harvard Summer School:

  1. At Harvard you are encouraged to learn, think and have group discussions outdoors
  2. Class participation is highly valued. 30% of the course evaluation is based on students class participation (at least for Nors 2 courses).
  3. Students learn through attending/facilitating workshops, giving presentations and doing projects on real companies or ideas that can be applied to the real world. A lot of emphasis is given on students to speak up, articulate and share their ideas, opinions and thoughts.
  4. Students are required to mostly find their own resources for the learning activities, and spoon-feeding or regurgitation of the Professors notes is simply a No No!
  5. The Professors are not there to tell you what is right and wrong, but to provoke you to think and challenge one another to find your own path in a myriad of possibilities. You have to be prepared to get constructive feedback from your peers and Professors at all times.

Finally, although learning is tough at Harvard, you are recommended to have fun while you try to innovate or find creative solutions to the biggest problems and issues that the world is facing today.

And amazingly, Nor Fadzleen Sadon attended Harvard Summer School while fasting, and one of her team project reports scored the highest (Al-Hamdulilla). Insya-Allah, she is destined to do great things for education in Malaysia and beyond :)

Creating EasyTooltip class Part 15

In this tutorial well add support for gradient strokes and background fills.

Create 2 new classes - GradientColorStroke and GradientColorRect. As I already said in earlier tutorials, the whole skinning system is very similar to the one in AdvAlert library.

GradientColorStroke.as code:

package com.kircode.EasyTooltip
{
import flash.geom.Matrix;
/**
* ...
* @author Kirill Poletaev
*/
public class GradientColorStroke
{
public var _lineThickness:Number;
public var _gradientType:String;
public var _colors:Array;
public var _alphas:Array;
public var _ratios:Array;
public var _matrix:Matrix;
public var _spreadMethod:String;
public var _interpolationMethod:String;
public var _focalPointRatio:Number;

/**
* Create a gradient colored line stroke. Uses same parameters as lineGradientStyle() + lineThickness.
* @paramlineThickness Thickness of the line stroke.
* @paramgradientType A value from the GradientType class that specifies which gradient type to use: GradientType.LINEAR or GradientType.RADIAL.
* @paramcolors An array of RGB hexadecimal color values used in the gradient; for example, red is 0xFF0000, blue is 0x0000FF, and so on. You can specify up to 15 colors. For each color, specify a corresponding value in the alphas and ratios parameters.
* @paramalphas An array of alpha values for the corresponding colors in the colors array; valid values are 0 to 1. If the value is less than 0, the default is 0. If the value is greater than 1, the default is 1.
* @paramratios An array of color distribution ratios; valid values are 0-255. This value defines the percentage of the width where the color is sampled at 100%. The value 0 represents the left position in the gradient box, and 255 represents the right position in the gradient box.
* @parammatrix A transformation matrix as defined by the flash.geom.Matrix class. The flash.geom.Matrix class includes a createGradientBox() method, which lets you conveniently set up the matrix for use with the beginGradientFill() method.
* @paramspreadMethod A value from the SpreadMethod class that specifies which spread method to use, either: SpreadMethod.PAD, SpreadMethod.REFLECT, or SpreadMethod.REPEAT.
* @paraminterpolationMethod A value from the InterpolationMethod class that specifies which value to use: InterpolationMethod.LINEAR_RGB or InterpolationMethod.RGB
* @paramfocalPointRation A number that controls the location of the focal point of the gradient. 0 means that the focal point is in the center. 1 means that the focal point is at one border of the gradient circle. -1 means that the focal point is at the other border of the gradient circle. A value less than -1 or greater than 1 is rounded to -1 or 1.
*/

public function GradientColorStroke(lineThickness:Number, gradientType:String, colors:Array, alphas:Array, ratios:Array, matrix:Matrix = null, spreadMethod:String = "pad", interpolationMethod:String = "rgb", focalPointRation:Number = 0)

_alphas = alphas;
_ratios = ratios;
_matrix = matrix;
_spreadMethod = spreadMethod;
_interpolationMethod = interpolationMethod;
_focalPointRatio = focalPointRation;
}

}

}

And GradientColorRect.as code:

package com.kircode.EasyTooltip
{
import flash.geom.Matrix;
/**
* ...
* @author Kirill Poletaev
*/
public class GradientColorRect
{
public var _gradientType:String;
public var _colors:Array;
public var _alphas:Array;
public var _ratios:Array;
public var _matrix:Matrix;
public var _spreadMethod:String;
public var _interpolationMethod:String;
public var _focalPointRatio:Number;
public var _radius:Array;

/**
* Create a gradient filled rectangle. Has the same parameters as beginGradientFill(), plus cornerRadius.
* @paramcornerRadius Radius of the corners of the box - top left, top right, bottom left, bottom right.
*/

public function GradientColorRect(gradientType:String, colors:Array, alphas:Array, ratios:Array, matrix:Matrix = null, spreadMethod:String = "pad", interpolationMethod:String = "rgb", focalPointRation:Number = 0, cornerRadius:Array = null)

}

}

}

Go to TooltipCursor.as. In the updateDisplay() function, add 2 new if..statements, that execute the code if backgroundStroke is a GradientColorStroke object and if backgroundRect is a GradientColorRect object.

Use the provided values to draw gradient stroke and box. Inside of each of these if...statements, add one more conditional, which checks if the _matrix object of that object is not null. If so, set the tx and ty variables of that matrix to actual_x and actual_y. This will ensure that the gradient box looks similar no matter in which direction it is stretched.

myStyle.backgroundRect = new GradientColorRect(GradientType.LINEAR, [0, 0], [0.2, 1], [0, 255], matrix1, "pad", "rgb", 0, [0, 0, 0, 0]);

var matrix2:Matrix = new Matrix();
matrix2.createGradientBox(240, 200, 1.57);
myStyle.backgroundStroke = new GradientColorStroke(2, GradientType.LINEAR, [0x000000, 0xffffff], [1, 1], [0, 255], matrix2, "pad", "rgb", 0);

tooltip = new EasyTooltip(stage, stage.stageWidth, stage.stageHeight, 0);
tooltip.setStyle(myStyle);
tooltip.addListener(object1, "Test test test test test test test test test test test test test test test");

Creating a Flex AIR Screenshot app Part 15

In this tutorial we will add an export screen state, which will also display the progress to the user.

Before we do that, lets first add smoothing to our exported pictures. Set the last parameter in the draw() method of the bitmap data object to true. This line is located in the doExport() function:

function doExport():void {
bd = new BitmapData(tempHTML.width, tempHTML.height, false);
bd.draw(tempHTML, null, null, null, null, true);
byteArray = encoder.encode(bd);
fileName = pref_destination + File.separator + folderName + File.separator + tempHTML.width + "x" + tempHTML.height + "." + pref_format;
file = new File(fileName);
fileStream = new FileStream();
fileStream.open(file, FileMode.WRITE);
fileStream.writeBytes(byteArray);
fileStream.close();
}

Now, lets create this export screen state. Add a new NavigatorContent with id of "export" (if you didnt have that one already), add a Label object with stylename of descriptionText and text value bound to a variable called exportText:

<s:NavigatorContent id="export">
<s:VGroup width="100%" horizontalAlign="center" paddingTop="20">
<s:Label styleName="descriptionText" text="{exportText}" />
</s:VGroup>
</s:NavigatorContent>

Now lets create this exportText variable, make it bindable:

[Bindable]
private var exportText:String;

If you didnt have the export navigator content before, you need to add a new object to the headerTitles array collection:

<fx:Declarations>
<mx:ArrayCollection id="headerTitles">
<fx:Object step="Step one:" description="load a web page." />
<fx:Object step="Loading..." description="please wait." />
<fx:Object step="Step two:" description="set your export preferences." />
<fx:Object step="Step two:" description="select the area you wish to crop." />
<fx:Object step="Step three:" description="set your export preferences for the cropped image." />
<fx:Object step="Exporting:" description="please wait." />
</mx:ArrayCollection>
</fx:Declarations>

Now go to the exportScreen() function. Add a new internal function called updateExportText with 4 parameters, and it should look like this:

function updateExportText(w:int, h:int, current:int, total:int):void {
exportText = "Exporting " + w + "x" + h + "." + pref_format + " (" + current + "/" + total + ")";
}

The function takes the values from the parameters and composes a message out of them. This message is then passed to the text field, since the value is boudn to that field.

Call this function after the sizes for the first screen are applied (or not applied, depending on the conditional results.

if(screensToExport[0].h <= 4096 && screensToExport[0].w <= 4096){
tempHTML.height = screensToExport[0].h;
tempHTML.width = screensToExport[0].w;
}
updateExportText(screensToExport[0].w, screensToExport[0].h, 1, screensToExport.length);

And in the onTimer() internal function too:

function onTimer(evt:TimerEvent):void {
// do export for the current size
if(screensToExport[timer.currentCount-1].h <= 4096 && screensToExport[timer.currentCount-1].w <= 4096){
timer.stop();
doExport();
timer.start();
}else {
Alert.show("Cannot export " + screensToExport[timer.currentCount-1].w + "x" + screensToExport[timer.currentCount-1].h + " - dimensions of a screenshot cannot extend 4096.","Sorry");
}
// change the size if this was not the last size in the array
if (timer.currentCount != screensToExport.length) {
tempHTML.horizontalScrollPolicy = "auto";
tempHTML.verticalScrollPolicy = "auto";
if(screensToExport[timer.currentCount].h <= 4096 && screensToExport[timer.currentCount].w <= 4096){
tempHTML.height = screensToExport[timer.currentCount].h;
tempHTML.width = screensToExport[timer.currentCount].w;
}
updateExportText(screensToExport[timer.currentCount].w, screensToExport[timer.currentCount].h, timer.currentCount+1, screensToExport.length);
}else {
// if it was the last size in the array, return to first page
timer.stop();
removeElement(tempHTML);
stack.selectedChild = loadpage;
}
}

And thats all for today! When the user is saving the images, the export progress is displayed, and after saving is done, it goes back to the first page.
